The short answer: early access has started
Halo: Campaign Evolved entered early access at 8:00 am PDT on 23 July 2026 for eligible Premium and Collector's Edition players. Halo Studios listed the same moment as 1:00 am AEST on Friday 24 July in Sydney, which explains why Australian searches began rising a calendar day later than the date shown in much of the American coverage.
The general release begins at 8:00 am PDT on 28 July. That is 1:00 am AEST on Wednesday 29 July in Sydney. At that point all editions become playable on supported platforms, and day-one access begins for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers.
Early access is therefore an edition benefit, not a separate test build or an invitation-only beta. Someone with the Standard Edition has the same base game but waits for the general launch window.
This is a remake of the first campaign, not Halo 7
The title can be confusing if it appears without context. Campaign Evolved rebuilds the story campaign from 2001's Halo: Combat Evolved. It returns to the beginning of Master Chief and Cortana's encounter with the ringworld rather than continuing the series as a numbered sequel.
Halo Studios describes it as a faithful but modernised remake. The original campaign missions have been reconstructed with high-definition visuals, updated cinematics, refined controls and redesigned level details. Xbox says Unreal Engine 5 powers the new presentation. Those changes make it more substantial than a resolution upgrade, but the familiar first-game story remains its foundation.
Operation: METEORITE is genuinely new story content
The largest confirmed addition is Operation: METEORITE, a three-mission bonus arc set roughly one year before the main campaign. It follows Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson and is intended to add context to events that lead into the familiar opening story.
The remake also expands the available weapons, vehicles, enemies and optional Skulls. Skulls alter rules and encounters rather than advancing the plot. Campaign Remix allows missions to be replayed with different combinations, so the new material is not limited to graphical changes.
Co-op changed as much as the graphics
Console players can use two-player split-screen co-op. Online campaign co-op supports as many as four players, with cross-platform play and shared progression across Xbox Series X and S, Windows PC, Steam and PlayStation 5.
Xbox says the rebuilt encounters account for the larger online squad. Weapon availability scales with player count rather than simply placing four players into spaces balanced for two. A Microsoft account and Gamertag are required, and PlayStation 5 and Steam players are prompted to link their platform account when they first play.
A Halo release on PlayStation is not a typo
The supported-platform list includes Xbox Series X and S, Xbox on PC, Steam, cloud play and PlayStation 5. The official edition guide also lists PlayStation 5 Pro. It does not list Xbox One, PlayStation 4 or Nintendo hardware.
That PlayStation launch is historically notable because Halo began as the defining first-party series for Microsoft's Xbox console. The game remains published by Xbox Game Studios, but Campaign Evolved launches on PlayStation 5 alongside the current Xbox and PC versions rather than arriving later as a port.
Check the edition before paying to play today
The Standard Edition contains the base game and unlocks at general release. The Premium Edition adds the early-access period and digital extras. Halo Support says the separate Premium Edition Upgrade does not contain the base game, so it only works with an owned copy or an eligible Game Pass entitlement.
Platform details are not identical. Halo Support says the standalone Premium upgrade is not offered on PlayStation; instead, owners of the PlayStation Standard Edition can see a discounted Premium Edition purchase reflecting the difference. Steam's Premium upgrade becomes available on 28 July, so the official support page should be checked before attempting an edition change.
Prices vary by store and region, and access rules can change after the launch window. The reliable way to decide is to check the edition name, supported platform, local unlock time and whether the base game is included. A cosmetic pack or upgrade should not be mistaken for a complete game licence.
What Curiosity Desk can confirm, and what it cannot
The release dates, platforms, mission count and co-op features above come from Halo Studios, Halo Support and Xbox. Curiosity Desk has not treated promotional impressions as an independent review, and this article does not score performance, visual quality or whether the remake is worth its price.
The useful distinction is simpler. Campaign Evolved is a current-hardware reconstruction of the original Halo campaign with three new prequel missions and broader co-op, launching on Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5. Early access is already running for eligible editions; the ordinary launch follows on 28 July PDT.
