Peter Rabbit Organics fruit pouch recall: codes, dates and what parents should do

The recall is narrow, even though the search term sounds broad

PT Organics Limited voluntarily recalled select Pumpkin Tree Peter Rabbit Organics Banana & Strawberry fruit puree pouches on July 21, 2026. The US Food and Drug Administration notice identifies one 4 oz (113 g) product, not every fruit pouch, every Banana & Strawberry snack or the full Peter Rabbit Organics range.

The product was sold nationwide only through Kroger, Meijer and Target between March 6 and July 13, 2026. A store name or pink pouch is not enough to establish that a product is affected. The official check requires the product name, barcode, packaging lane and best-before date to line up.

Start with the barcode, but do not stop there

Turn the pouch over and look for barcode 8 15367 01078 0. Retail listings may display the same number without spaces or with leading zeroes, such as 0081536701078. Those formats describe the same retail identifier, but a matching barcode is only the first of three checks in the recall notice.

The reason for using all three details is simple: packaging can look nearly identical across flavours and production runs. A photograph in a social post can show the front, but the information that separates recalled stock is printed on the back. Keep the pouch upright and photograph the full rear panel if you need a readable record.

The lane number must be 4

The FDA notice says the affected lane number is the digit 4 printed on the rear right-hand side seam. It is a production detail, not the number of pouches in a box and not part of the best-before date. Look along the sealed vertical edge rather than searching the nutrition panel.

A barcode and best-before date without lane number 4 do not complete the official match. If the printing is smudged, do not guess from the colour or flavour name. Set the pouch aside so it is not served, then use the manufacturer contact route or the retailer where it was purchased to clarify the code.

Only six best-before dates are named

The six dates listed by FDA are January 19, January 20, March 17, March 18, May 14 and May 15 of 2027. On the pouch they appear as 01/19/2027, 01/20/2027, 03/17/2027, 03/18/2027, 05/14/2027 and 05/15/2027.

The notice says no other Pumpkin Tree best-before dates, flavours or branded products are affected. That limit is important because photos of several similar pouches are circulating with recall stories. The exact affected product needs the listed barcode, lane 4 and one of those six dates together.

Why the pouch was recalled

The company reported an internal packaging defect that can leave a strand of soft, food-grade plastic inside the finished product. Its packaging supplier had recalled a production run of defective pouches, and PT Organics says inspections then found a plastic strand attached inside a small number of finished pouches made with that packaging.

Food-grade describes the material's intended use around food; it does not turn a loose strand into an ingredient. The Hawaiʻi Department of Health says the defect may cause injury or create a choking hazard. The recall is therefore about a physical foreign object, not an undeclared allergen, bacteria or a change to the fruit recipe.

What to do with a matching pouch

Do not eat the product or feed it to another person. FDA says consumers and caregivers should either dispose of a matching pouch or return it to the place of purchase. Keep it away from children while deciding which option to use, and do not open it to search for a plastic strand.

If you want a retailer refund, it is sensible to preserve the pouch, purchase record and photographs until the store explains its process. The federal notice does not promise that every retailer uses the same receipt rule. Target lists the item on its official recall page, while Kroger and Meijer customers can contact the store or retailer support for the applicable return steps.

What if someone already ate from the pouch?

No injuries had been reported when the FDA announcement was published. That does not establish what was inside a particular pouch, and it should not be used to dismiss new symptoms. If someone is having trouble breathing or is choking, call 911. MedlinePlus advises medical help when a child may have swallowed a foreign object.

For a possible plastic ingestion without an immediate breathing emergency, a healthcare professional or Poison Control can consider the person's age, symptoms, amount and timing. Poison Control's US service is available online and at 1-800-222-1222. Do not induce vomiting or perform an unproven home test to search for the material.

A very similar Strawberry & Banana pouch is not the recalled barcode

The manufacturer's product-information page specifically says its Strawberry & Banana pouch with barcode 8 15367 01010 0 is not affected. That number differs from the recalled Banana & Strawberry barcode by only a few digits, which is why flavour wording and the picture on the front can be misleading.

Do not turn that distinction into a blanket safety claim for any pouch that looks similar. Use the actual package in your hand. First read the barcode, then find the lane number and date. If all three match the recall, follow the stop-use and return-or-dispose instructions regardless of where the pouch was stored or whether another pouch from the box looked normal.

Multipacks need to be checked pouch by pouch

A variety box can contain several flavours and individual pouches may carry their own identifiers. The recall criteria apply to the individual Banana & Strawberry pouch. Do not assume every item in a mixed box is recalled, but do not assume the box label proves that none are affected either.

Separate any pouch that matches the flavour and barcode, then inspect the lane and date on that pouch. Keep unaffected flavours away from the recall pile so one package is not returned or discarded by mistake. The FDA notice states that other flavours are outside this recall.

No reported injuries does not make the recall optional

A voluntary recall can remove a product before a pattern of reported injuries develops. Here, the company says its own inspection confirmed the packaging material inside a small number of pouches. Waiting to see whether more incident reports appear would defeat the preventive purpose of the notice.

The useful question is not whether the product has harmed someone else. It is whether the pouch in front of you matches the official identifiers. If it does, do not serve it. If it does not, keep the photographs and codes rather than sharing a broad warning that incorrectly labels the entire brand as recalled.

The two-minute kitchen check

Find every Pumpkin Tree Peter Rabbit Organics pouch in the pantry, lunch bag and car. Set aside the 4 oz Banana & Strawberry flavour. On each one, check for barcode 8 15367 01078 0, lane number 4 on the rear right seam and one of the six 2027 best-before dates.

Photograph a complete match, keep it away from children and choose disposal or a retailer return. Check the FDA or manufacturer page for later updates rather than relying on a cropped screenshot.
