A heat dome is an informal name for a large, stubborn area of high pressure that helps very hot weather remain over the same region. It is not a solid lid and it does not trap a fixed bubble of air under a visible shell. The useful picture is a broad atmospheric pattern that keeps air descending, limits cloud and rain formation, and gives the ground repeated days to absorb solar energy.

The word dome describes the shape meteorologists can see in pressure and temperature patterns through the depth of the atmosphere. Near the surface, people experience the result rather than the shape: hot afternoons, reduced overnight relief and a run of days in which the usual weather changes arrive too slowly. A heat dome can contribute to a heat wave, but the two terms are not identical. The dome describes part of the atmospheric setup; a heat wave describes the period of unusually hot conditions and its duration.

Why sinking air warms instead of cooling the ground

High-pressure systems are associated with air moving downward through the atmosphere. As that air descends into regions of higher pressure, it is compressed and warms. The descent also works against the upward motion that helps air cool, water vapour condense and clouds grow. Fewer clouds allow more sunlight to reach the ground, while limited rain gives the landscape less chance to cool through evaporation.

NOAA explains the mechanism as a cap: air near the ground cannot rise freely, so warmth accumulates beneath a persistent high-pressure system. The cap is not perfectly sealed. Air still moves, local storms can occur and temperatures vary across the affected area. What matters is that the broad pattern repeatedly favours warming over relief. Each sunny day can start from a warmer base than the day before, especially when nights remain unusually warm.

Why the pattern can stay parked for days

Weather normally changes as pressure systems and the jet stream move from west to east. During a prolonged heat event, the upper-air ridge can become slow-moving or be reinforced by the surrounding pattern. Incoming systems are steered around it or weakened before they can replace the hot air. That persistence is what turns an ordinary hot day into a multi-day hazard.

Dry ground can strengthen the heat. When soil and plants have moisture available, some incoming energy is used to evaporate water. When the surface is dry, a larger share can heat the ground and the air directly. Cities add another layer because roads, roofs and concrete store heat during the day and release it after sunset. These feedbacks do not create the high-pressure ridge, but they can intensify what people feel beneath it.

The night can matter as much as the afternoon maximum

A cooler night gives the body, buildings and public infrastructure time to recover. When temperatures remain high after dark, the strain continues through what should be the relief period. That is why Environment and Climate Change Canada defines extreme heat events using both duration and a lack of overnight relief, not only one dramatic daytime number.

A heat dome is not the same thing as an official heat warning

Heat dome is a useful explanatory label, but Canadians should act on official local alerts. Environment and Climate Change Canada says its heat warnings are impact-based and are generally issued 18 to 24 hours before an extreme heat event. This distinction prevents two common mistakes. A headline about a heat dome does not prove that every city underneath a broad map has crossed its warning threshold. Conversely, the absence of the phrase heat dome does not mean hot weather is harmless. Local temperature, humidity, smoke, building conditions, health and the length of the event all influence risk. The live warning for a person's location is more useful than a viral map without dates or thresholds.

What climate change changes, and what it does not prove

A particular high-pressure ridge is a weather pattern. Human-caused climate change does not need to create that ridge from nothing in order to make the resulting heat more severe. A warmer background climate raises the starting temperature on which the weather pattern acts. Environment and Climate Change Canada says climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme hot temperatures and contributing to more severe heat waves, drought and wildfire risk.

That does not justify attributing every local temperature record to one cause without a formal analysis. Event-attribution studies compare observations and climate models to estimate how warming changed the probability or intensity of a specific event. The careful conclusion is broader: persistent high pressure explains the immediate heat-building mechanism, while long-term warming increases the conditions in which extreme heat can reach dangerous levels.

What to check when the phrase starts trending

First check the official alert for your location and its start and end times. Then look at the overnight minimum, not only the daytime maximum. Consider air quality as well, because high pressure and light winds can allow pollution to accumulate, and Canadian guidance notes that wildfire smoke and extreme heat can occur together. If both are present, Health Canada advises prioritising staying cool because overheating can be the more immediate danger.

Prepare a place to cool down before the hottest period begins, drink water before thirst becomes strong and check on people who may need help. Health Canada identifies confusion, fainting and a very high body temperature as possible signs of heat stroke and says it is a medical emergency requiring an immediate call to 911 or the local emergency number. A trend can explain why the sky pattern matters; the official warning and health guidance tell you what to do where you are.
